How to Access Gmail in iPhone Mail Using IMAP

Use the following steps to get Gmail on your phone using the Gmail IMAP server settings:

  1. On the iPhone home screen, openSettings.

  2. Go toPasswords & Accounts >Add Account, then chooseGoogle.

    These screens are named differently on older versions of the Mail app. ChooseMail>Contacts> Calendars, then go toAdd Account>Google Mail.

  3. Enter your Gmail email address, then tapNext.

  4. Enter your Gmail password, then tapNext.

  5. Turn on theMail toggle switch to ensure that your email can be used. You can also enable other items to sync contacts, calendar events, and notes.

  6. Press the home button to exit to the home screen.

How to Access Gmail in iPhone Mail Using POP

The Gmail POP server settings are needed to use Gmail on your phone over POP.

  1. Open theSettings app and go toPasswords & Accounts>Add Account >Other >Add Mail Account.

  2. Enter your name, email address, and password, then tapNext.

  3. SelectPOP.

    • Host Name:pop.gmail.com
    • User Name: Your full email address
    • Password: The password to your email account
    • Host Name:smtp.gmail.com
    • User Name: Your full email address
    • Password: The password to your email account
  4. TapSave.

  5. Select the Gmail account you just added.

  6. Tapsmtp.gmail.com towards the bottom of the page, and then again at the top of the next page.

  7. Turn on theUse SSLtoggle switch.

  8. In theServer Port text box, delete the existing number and enter465.

  9. SelectDone.

Depending on the POP download settings in your Gmail account, you may be able to delete an email on your iPhone and have it remain in your Gmail account. Adjust this feature by changing theWhen messages are accessed with POP setting on this page of your Gmail account.

How to Set Up Gmail With IMAP

After IMAP is enabled in Gmail, set up a new IMAP account in your email client of choice. If the email client is listed below, click on it to learn how to set up Gmail on your device quickly. Otherwise, follow the generic instructions for setting up Gmail with IMAP manually.

  • Outlook Mail
  • Yahoo Mail
  • Pegasus Mail

Manually Set Up Gmail With IMAP

If your email program is not listed above, open your application of choice and go to the screen where additional accounts are added. If the application gives you the option to select Gmail, follow the automatic setup process.

To find instructions on how to set up an email client correctly, perform a Google search with the name of the email client plus the phraseGmail IMAP. For example, search forMozilla Thunderbird Gmail IMAP if you use the Thunderbird email client.

Otherwise, if the email client does not present Gmail as a default option, you may be prompted to enter the server information manually. For Gmail, use the following information:

IMAP SERVER (RECEIVING MAIL)

  • IMAP Server:imap.gmail.com
  • Port:993
  • Require SSL:Yes
  • Username: Your Gmail email address
  • Password: Your Gmail email password

SMTP SERVER (SENDING MAIL)

  • SMTP Server:smtp.gmail.com
  • Port:465
  • Require SSL/STARTTLS:Yes
  • Require SMTP authentication:Yes
  • Username: Your Gmail email address
  • Password: Your Gmail email password
